Hey there, Doodle Parent. It’s Corinne Gearhart, The Doodle Pro™, and I’ve been hearing from so many of you that life lately just feels… a little extra. Stress is high, routines are off, and even your dogs are picking up on it.

That’s why I knew it was the perfect time to re-share one of our most beloved episodes on calming dog anxiety—with a unique and natural approach: music designed for dogs.

Whether your Doodle is barking more, struggling with separation, reacting to fireworks, or just needs help settling down… this episode is for you. And let’s be honest—you might need a little nervous system support, too. 😉

🎹 Meet Lisa Spector: The Pet Calming Maestro

Today’s guest is Lisa Spector, a Juilliard-trained concert pianist who co-founded the original movement of classical music designed to calm dogs.

Lisa's story is incredible—what began as an effort to soothe her guide dog puppy grew into 16 albums, over 1,500 shelters playing her music, and thousands of dogs (and their humans!) finding calm through sound.

Her music, now under the brand My Zen Pet, is based on research that shows how lower-frequency classical music calms the canine nervous system. Lisa shares how to use sound strategically to reduce dog anxiety at home.

🔬 The Science Behind Calming Music for Dogs

Lisa Spector:
Dogs hear almost twice the frequency range humans do. That means they’re more sensitive to volume, pitch, and tone—and why loud TVs or random Spotify playlists may actually stress them out more.

Research has shown:

  • Lower frequencies (think cello, bass, and left-hand piano) help calm dogs faster
  • Classical music is far more soothing than TV, pop, or even random instrumental playlists
  • Dogs form associations with sound, so consistency matters

🐶 How to Use Music to Calm Your Dog’s Anxiety

Corinne Gearhart – The Doodle Pro™:
Okay, Lisa—help us become sound-aware Doodle parents. What are the best ways to use music to calm an anxious dog?

Lisa Spector:
There are 3 big factors:

  1. What music you play
→ Use music designed for dogs, not just any classical playlist. My album Dog Gone Calm is a great place to start.
  2. When you play it
→ Play calming music when your dog is relaxed and happy, not only when you’re leaving or during storms. This builds a positive emotional association.
  3. How loud you play it
→ Dogs don’t need loud music to calm down. Use a gentle, soft volume—what you’d listen to if you were reading quietly—and then lower it a bit. That’s perfect for their sensitive ears.

🎼 Don’t Just Mask Sounds—Use Music to Change Behavior

A lot of dog parents make the mistake of blasting loud music or the TV to cover barking, fireworks, or outside noise. But that can backfire. Instead, use calming music proactively, every day, to help your dog’s brain settle before anxiety sets in.

Veterinarians in the Fear Free™ movement even prescribe Lisa’s music as part of their treatment plans—just 30 minutes a day of listening together can make a huge difference for dogs with separation anxiety, noise sensitivity, or general stress.
